Dangerous Fashion (Or How I Broke My Foot)
Tuesday October 3, 2006
I've taken a hard fall off my galloping horse on a rocky trail, teetered on high heels since I was a girl, even dropped all sorts of heavy kids' toys on my feet. But it merely took a misstep on a rock yesterday while wearing platform sandals to break my foot.
According to a Harvard study, women have four times the foot problems as men mostly because of high heels. "High heels cause all kinds of injuries from osteoarthritis in the knee to ankle sprains...shoes with narrow toe boxes and elevated heels are a primary source of foot pain, injury, and disabling conditions including bunions, hammertoes, Achilles tendonitis, compressed nerves, and corns," according to "Foot Care Basics," a special report from Harvard Medical School.
Does this mean I'll be smarter and opt for ugly comfort shoes from now on? Probably. Because while I would rather wear adorable heels, nothing is frumpier than the big gray fracture boot and crutches that I'll be spending the next few weeks on.

Yes, I agree with you about the Platform heels. I do not wear them and there are many places now that do not sell them. Thank goodness for “Choice!”
Two words: kitten heels.
There are so many cute shoes that are pain free such as chinese slippers and flats that allow you to be stylish without killing yourself for fashion.
With age comes wisdom, and boring comfortable shoes.
Thank God!!! I love my sensible comfortable, foot loving shoes !!!
I don’t care about foot fashion any more, and I am so happy about that.
I guess I sound old saying that, but, my feet never hurt any more, and I no longer have callouses to fret about.
A broken foot? No!!! I can’t believe this, I hope you’re okay. I had sent you a few emails and now I know why I haven’t heard from you! Cynthia, you poor thing, let me know if there’s anything I can do.
Hurray for my comrades in arms (or feet)! I gave up high heels when I started teaching. I could not spend a whole day standing on the blasted things. I now have a closet full of fashionable AND comfortable flat shoes.
I also had to have a bunionectomy. Not fun. (and yes, horror of fashion horrors, I have 2 pairs of Birks). My feet are more important to me now.
My sympathies to you. My heart goes out to you. I know what it is like to have your feet hurt! It is so inconvinient to have ones daily life interupted. I unfortunately have had foot problems for the last 7 or 8 years. (plantar faciitis). My advise to you is get well fast and to find some great food excercises to strengthen your feet so you can wear some great shoes maybe not all the time but at least some to the time. There is nothing like heels to make you feel like a woman. ( I opt for wedges beacause they give you over all support and those dreaded platforms with a pretty fat straps on top. ( so your foot won’t slip) Also I wear orthotics so I have to have a heel to make them work. The shoes are hard to find but well worth the pleasure. God Bless and have a fast recovery
