Should You Worry That Your Fur is Fido?

By Cynthia Nellis, About.com

Current laws only require that fur under $150 be labeled. That means you could innocently buy a parka trimmed with what you think is fake fur, but be getting real animal fur instead.

Although raccoon dogs are not kept as pets, they are from the same animal family as our domesticated dogs. Animal rights groups claim that the dogs are inhumanely skinned alive.

The Humane Society, during a 2-year investigation, tested garments from several major designers and found that the fur advertised as faux, was actually dog.

A raccoon dog (Genus Nyctereutes) is a canid; dogs, wolves, foxes and coyotes are also in this family.

It is not currently illegal to import raccoon dog fur.

Where It Stands

The 2007 Moran-Ferguson Dog and Cat Fur Prohibition Enforcement Act calls to close the loophole that lets fur garments under $150 be unlabeled.
