From red matte lips (Anne Hathaway in Dior lipstick) to head-to-toe red (Geena Davis, towering in a strapless red Escada dress with beaded bodice), red was the surprise color of the night.

The runways have been awash with nudes and soft tones, but Hollywood could have cared less. It broke out the red as a sign that glamour had returned to the red carpet in full force.

And while red was everywhere, it couldn't have looked more different.

At the vavoom end of the red spectrum there was stunning Scarlett Johansson in a cleavage-baring Valentino dress. She's been called a modern-day Marilyn Monroe, and with her sideswept long hair and come-hither dress she definitely fits the bill.

In the sophisticated range of reds, nobody looked better than Eva Longoria, shrugging off her designation as a Mr. Blackwell Worst-Dressed for 2005. Eva made a huge impact in a dress that finally fit her: a draped front red Bob Mackie accessorized perfectly with platform silver sandals and an H Stern bracelet.
