Some critics panned Gwyenth Paltrow's choice of pink Ralph Lauren gown (TV Guide.com recounts one critic saying she looked like "a Barbie doll wrapped in satin ribbon,"), but the style icon still managed to set off a trend for pink when she accepted the 1999 award for Best Actress. Her all-American look was a good match for designer Ralph Lauren, who appeals to the well-scrubbed, clean-cut demographic (of course, this was all well before Gwyneth married a Brit, moved to London and allegedly started dissing the States with comments like "The British are much more intelligent and civilized than the Americans." Gwyneth accessorized the dress with her own jewels from Harry Winston, a 40-carat diamond necklace worth $160,000, that was a gift from her parents.
