America Under Attack
New York
September 12, 2001
The day after the attack on America, New York was still in shock.
The heavy smoke was visible from just about anywhere in Manhattan and the streets were just starting to show signs of life again as cabs, workers and tourists ventured out into the city.
Photo left: Along Houston street a man reads a newspaper of the previous day's tragedy, while wearing a mask to protect himself from fumes and smoke.
In lower Manhattan, people walked past the vehicle blockades on 14th street down to Houston to get as close to the disaster site as they could.
The crowds were quiet and reverent, and almost everyone came toting a camera or video cam to record the solemn events.
The city
Lower Manhattan was covered with a thick acrid smoke that made breathing difficult.
New Yorkers gingerly carried on with their lives -- kids on scooters, men and women on
bicycles -- but with masks on.
Flyers began appearing on telephone poles to help frantic relatives locate their loved ones. Notices of candlelight vigils, shelters and crisis help also went up immediately.
