Once you've sifted through top 10 lists and "musts" you may still wonder what to wear this season.
Here is a practical guide to standout style in a few favorite wardrobe categories:
Pantsuits Forget last year's ladylike suits and go for a pantsuit now. Not only is it younger and hipper, it's much more forgiving to your figure to wear pants and a jacket. Photos below: Left, R. Scott French; Right, Catherine Malandrino.

After-five
If you're not sure you're ready to go with babydoll dresses for special occasions (like a few high-end designers proposed this season), you'll love sophisticated separates and dresses. Photos, below: Left: Paula Hian; Right, Donald Deal

Leather
Jackets, skirts and pants in leather are standbys, but now you can try shirts and dresses in skins, too. Look for interesting details like ruching (gathers) with ultra-soft leathers. Photos, below: Left: Margie Tsai; Right: Catherine Malandrino

Outerwear The trench is a classic, but in interesting fabrics (prints and denim) and surprising colors (like white for winter), it looks new again. Camel is huge this year; red and black are both great outerwear colors as well.
