Style doesn't take summer break
June 1999

Summer is the season that really tests your style IQ:

  • White shoes or not?
  • Tropical prints -- allover or accent?
  • Makeup -- skip it or change it?
  • Bare, and if yes, how much?

Fashion is in full swing this summer with many fun, new looks. All trends not being created equal, here's a guide to looking great this summer.

Buy it!

White
Zenlike purity and softness abounds in creations shown in FashionClick. Ghost long chemise ($235) in viscose manages to capture the spirit.

Strapless
Dressy versions were all over hip, young Hollywood at the Oscars, like Liv Tyler and Jennifer Lopez.

Sheer
The ethereal look goes forward to Summer 2000, according to Fashion Icon. Be ahead of your time with a mesh long-sleeve T ($48) to wear over a camisole or a dress from Central Park West.

Peasant touches
The appeal of peasant chic, as described by Fashion UK, will carry over into Fall/Winter '99/00. For now, there's an Anthropologie lavender eyelet dress ($64.99) with peasant neckline to wear on or off shoulders.

Exotic shoes
As millennium fever heats up, look for global prints and influences to go to the front of the fashion pack. For now, there's Babouche's Arabian slides in a luxe red with gold print ($80)

Tropical Accent Prints
Forget utilitarian chic for a season and go a little kitschy. Pure fun: Holly-Go-Lightly large tropical tote ($75)

Shimmery Makeup
Take a shine to Urban Decay's eyeshadow like Cash (pale green with glitter) or Exhaust (soft lavender with silver) Both $14.

Skip it!

  • Nurse chic -- white clunky shoes. Even Tods look tacky in white.
  • Shrugs (the teensy sleeve-only sweater things) -- for teens only!
  • Cher Hair(straight, long down the middle)
  • Capris, knee length. Now, the newest pant is cropped above the ankle
