Designers will try almost anything to jazz up men's fashion: ruffles, metallics, bright colors, man-furs, diamond jewelry, even skirts.

The few and the bold will adopt these looks.

The rest of mankind -- guys who feel cutting edge trading their Nikes for sports clogs -- stick with tried-and-trues such as polo shirts, sweaters, suits and khakis.

Trend-happy
There are, of course, a couple of trends for 2001 that may appeal to any guy:

-The sartorial equivalent of the manly Hummer is the influence of military apparel in fashion. Look for uniform touches (lots of pockets, epaulets, khakis, army greens, field jackets) and camouflage.

-Color. Believe it or not, even the stodgiest guy gets tired of all black, tan, navy and gray. For spring guys are sporting pastels (lilac, mint, pink), turning into hot brights (purple, fuchsia, etc.) for fall.
