Rock stars like their form-fitting panache. Space travelers appreciate their functional ease. Female action heroes admire their sleek silhouette and ease of movement. And fashion lovers? We love jumpsuits because they are everything fashion should be: flattering, easy to wear, sexy and hip.

Thanks to Jennifer Lopez and the denim "Frankie B" number she wore on her album cover (and her "Saturday Night Live" hosting gig), jumpsuits are now big news.

First conceived as one-piece workwear item -- the Lee-Union-All -- in 1913, the jumpsuit remains one of the most versatile fashion silhouettes.

Made up in leather or PVC, the jumpsuit takes on a fetish look. In white with rhinestones, it's reminiscent of Elvis. An orange jumpsuit denotes prison uniforms, while khaki gives it a workwear spin.

Tips for wearing a jumpsuit

  • Fit is everything! You don't have to pour yourself into the one-piece like J-Lo, but a sleek look helps.
  • Check key fit points: waist, rear end, bust. Bagging in one area, while sagging in the other will kill the look. This is one look that may require the finishing touches of a tailor (worth the investment!)
  • A jumpsuit makes a statement. No need to pile on the jewels or layer on the makeup with this look.
  • What you wear underneath is almost as important as the jumpsuit itself. Pantylines or bulges are magnified in a one-piece. Go for a thong, for ultimate sleekness. If you need some tummy control, try footless legwear with a control waist at Victoria's Secret.
  • Jumpsuits give you a long. lean line. Add even more visual height with a heel (boots or sandals look best).
  • If you want to get the streamlined look of a jumpsuit, without the fit worries, try two pieces that give you the look. Match two pieces of the same color and add waist definition with a same-color belt.
