Sale shopping guidelines

How to shop

From Casey, for About.com

  1. Never buy something just for the sake of a sale. Just as with full-price items, if you don't love it, don't buy it.
  2. Avoid the "I'll buy something to go with it" route when it comes to sales; that would defeat the point of the bargain! A good rule of thumb: if you can't think of three things to pair it with, forget about it.
  3. Keep in mind that you can make alterations. Love the jacket, but hate the buttons? Perk it up with new, funky toppers. Do the pants fit great, but are a tad on the short side? Hem them into sleek cropped pants.
  4. Be open-minded about fit. There's a chance that the reason it's on sale in the first place is because of irregular sizing, so don't be afraid to go up or down a size. But remember: if it doesn't fit perfectly, don't buy it!
  5. Trendy items are risky to buy during end-of-season sales because of such a short "must-have" existence, so snap them up at early-season sales, and stick to basics at the end of the season clearance.
