Fashion 101: Pulling it all together

Finding something great to wear each day is the result of planning, self-awareness and experience.

But mostly it's about details.

Here's how to pull it all together with ease:

Add-on style
Accessories can add style to a not-so-stylin' ensemble, make a classic look trendy and put a unique spin on any outfit.

Accessories should always enhance the overall look and add interest to the clothes. For example, a great turquoise cuff would be fabulous with a chic black outfit.

Your accessory wardrobe should have a wide range of styles, designers, and colors.

My must-own list:

  • A handbag. This can go from simple to eclectic, small to large, bright to neutral. It all depends on your style and taste. Keep it semi-basic and make sure it coordinates with your wardrobe and look.
  • A pair of hoops. These add a certain vibe to any outfit.  Choose a pair with dangling beads, funky colors, or just a simple gold or silver pair. Large or small - doesn't matter.
  • A watch. Personal style can really shine with your choice of watch.  You wear it day after day, so it's definitely a part of your look. Choose something that is completely you- funky, sleek, chic, rustic, preppy.
  • Several great belts (one brown, one black, one colorful). Belts add a great finishing touch to any outfit, as long as they coordinate.

Don't be afraid to experiment with interesting accessory combos. Put pearls with jeans, chunky belts with gauzy skirts, etc.

Keep A Clean Closet
Putting that tank back on its hanger or folding those floods may sound pointless now. But in a week without any closet up-keep whatsoever, you'll definitely regret it.  It'll continue building up until all you have is bare shelves and empty hanger bars and a huge pile of hipsters, tanks and slides!

  • Remember to fold sweaters and other knits to keep them from getting out of shape.  Fold jeans and trousers as well -- unless you have proper hangers for pants -- to avoid annoying creases and bends.
  • Keep your clothes organized first by category (shirts, pants, long sleeve, short sleeve, etc), then by colors. You can even get really fancy and "colorize" the closet like retail merchandisers do: put them together by colors, light to dark. It will help you find colors in a jiffy (and your closet will look really pretty, too).
  • If you have the luxury of an extra cedar closet, store all of your out-of-season clothing there. Otherwise, keep your same-season clothes grouped together in your closet. Add a sachet or potpourri to keep your clothes smelling nice and fresh.

Perfecting Your Wardrobe
Polish your look with these no-fail tips:

  • Choose two to three foundation colors to base your entire wardrobe on. Always stick with these colors (and only budge for coordinating colors!). Choose colors that work for you. For example black, khaki, and denim all work together and can be easy coordinated.
  • Don't go overboard with patterns. Few prints really mesh well together. Buy a few well-thought-out prints, then stick with solids.  Certain plaids - especially Burberry's signature plaid - are worth the investment, because they never really become dated.  Stripes are always great: very classic.  Be sure to check out vertical-striped trousers (so hot right now).
  • When all else fails, you need to have basics to fall back on. Buy the necessary essentials - well-fitting solid tees, flattering jeans, several skirts - that can be easily mix-and matched.
  • Only buy things that have a perfect fit, or else you'll end up noticing the faults much more once out of the store and in your closet. Find a trustworthy tailor, as well, for those fabulous pieces that need a little altering.

Know Your Clothes
This may sound a little off, but if you know each piece of clothing front to back, you'll be so much better off.  You should know the following things about each individual item in your closet:

  • The fabric and designer.
  • Colors it looks best paired with.
  • What style of clothing it looks best paired with (long, short, fitted, loose).
  • The right accessories and shoes with it. This knowledge will help you know what your wardrobe is lacking and what your most-valued pieces are. It will help keep your wardrobe organized. Keep the information on record and in order with pictures, sketches, lists, or a database.

Keep Track
If you're really set on looking great day after day (and you're willing to put quite a lot of effort into it) I suggest planning ahead and keeping track of your daily ensembles.  This works great during school-months or for planning vacations.

Get a notebook or calendar that can be solely devoted to describing and recording outfits. This eliminates trying to remember when you wore an outfit last ("Did I wear this the other day? Last week?)." Instead, you'll have written records to look back upon.

Take Care of Your Clothes
Washing and cleaning your clothes and shoes is important to having a great wardrobe.  Make sure you read the labels before you buy anything, just to make sure you have the time and patience (handwashing takes time;
dry-cleaning takes money).

Always keep clothes and shoes in tip-top shape (shoes shined and clean, hems hemmed, buttons securely on, and no loose threads) to keep your overall appearance neat.
