Man oh man!

Guy trends & style resources

By , About.com Guide

Designers will try almost anything to jazz up men's fashion: ruffles, metallics, bright colors, man-furs, diamond jewelry, even skirts.

The few and the bold will adopt these looks.

The rest of mankind -- guys who feel cutting edge trading their Nikes for sports clogs -- stick with tried-and-trues such as polo shirts, sweaters, suits and khakis.

Trend-happy

There are, of course, a couple of trends that may appeal to any guy:

  • The sartorial equivalent of the manly Hummer is the influence of military apparel in fashion. Look for uniform touches like lots of pockets, epaulets, khakis andfield jackets.
  • The zip-up jacket. Great for corporate casual over a polo shirt.
  • The trench coat. Really too much of a classic to be trendy, but looks great again.
  • Layering. As in a long-sleeve Tee under a button-down shirt. The more layers the merrier.

Logo mania

Want to splurge a bit, but don't know which way to throw your money? Here's a quickie guide to designers:

  • Smart-chic: Helmut Lang
  • Seriously hip: Hedi Slimane's for Dior Homme
  • Fashion victim: Gucci and Prada
  • Preppy cool: Tod's
  • Street luxe: Sean John
  • Clean lines: Calvin Klein, Jil Sander
  • Biz whiz: Giorgio Armani, Hugo Boss
