Um, You Know Crystal Renn's a Size 8, Right?

Crystal RennEver since she came back on the modeling scene at 175 lbs, plus-size model Crystal Renn was deemed the face of plus-size girls everywhere. Although at merely a size 12 (at 5'9" you can carry that weight pretty well), she was never really all that plus.

The latest pics I just saw of Crystal (these photos, above are actually from March) show that she has lost weight, down to about 150 lbs. (what she says is an 8 or 10, in a NY Magazine interview.) Sadly, even at an 8, she's still considered plus in the fashion world.

Does it help to be outraged by the disconnect between the fashion world (where a 5'10", 120 lb. Ralph Lauren model was supposedly fired for being too fat) and the real world (where the average woman wears a 14)? Not really. But it does make me appreciate designers who are more inclusive with their sizing (Badgley Mischka, Diane von Furstenberg, Michael Kors -- we're talking to you!) I’ve never understood why models have to weigh under 90 lbs. and be over 6 feet tall. Most women don’t even want to look like that and will never be that size.

Oh come on! Size 8 isn’t even plus size if you’re between 5′7″ and 5′9″! It’s more of the right dress size at these height ranges! It’s usually size 10 or 12 that’s typically plus size. Sometimes the fashion industry is crazy.

An artist friend explained it all years ago in terms of fashion illustration – of which there USED to be a lot. When drawn the figure was elongated for a stylish flare – & when it went over to photos, they kept the style without thinking where it came from. When DRAWN, everyone knew it was conceptual – not reality!!! So we are stuck with girls who are trying to be drawings – & the rest of us are wondering how in heaven’s name we could wear any of this – which certainly makes no sense in terms of the fashion BUSINESS – meaning that they are there to SELL clothes to US (at 14)!!!
I make up my quirky wardrobe largely from vintage pieces – & find that I can finagle my size that way….

Everything looks good on a size 2 model–that’s why they use them. If they used size 10 models they would actually have to design something that looks good on a “normal” person. We need to quit feeding the monster that fashion has become–it isn’t realistic.

You never know what fashion trends are going to be in the coming year. May be we will witness some changes on the ramp as well.
