Party Definitions: Black Tie, Formal, Cocktail & More

I'm already planning my Christmas party and although I'd love to say "Cowboy Chic" on the invitations (because we're having it out on the ranch), I'll probably just go with something understandable like "Casual Attire." But I've been invited to parties before that had cryptic dress codes like "Cabaret Chic." For that party I couldn't figure out how to incorporate the Liza-like top hat, tails, itty bitty shorts and heels; so I just wore a little black dress.
