Tricky Trends: Harem Pants, Dirndl Skirts, Bike Shorts
Tuesday September 16, 2008
Although Fashion Week showed lots of lovely new looks -- sheer layers, florals, jumpsuits -- the questionable trends are the ones that really stood out. First and foremost? Harem pants. Many designers included a version in their collections. And you have to give them credit for at least trying to mix things up since there are only so many things you can do with pants (and we've maxed out on skinny, crops are a basics and high-waisted, wide legs never really took off.) But the real question is Would you wear these new trends? (Photo Credit: Brad Lorbach/Getty Images)

I have and probably will wear the following again.
drindl skirt, bike short.
I will never wear harem pants.
While all of these trends are tricky, harem pants and jumpsuits can be flattering. The key with both of these is a good belt that defines the waist. I’d be willing to try them. Now the overalls… not so sure!
Harem pants can be hot. They’re tricky to style but when they work they really work.
The key to harem pants is a fitted top. Worn low (not buttcrack low, top-of-hipbone low) and paired with a fitted tee shirt or tank top, harem pants can accentuate a small waist and create that hourglass shape, especially on someone with a toned midriff.
Sorry, but I saw harem pants all over Europe this summer, and I can’t get into them…there wasn’t a single example on the street that worked. I hope I’m proven wrong one day! Otherwise, none of these presents much a problem…though bike shorts are tricky:)
I have a pair of harem pants. I didn’t know they were “in style” until I picked up an Elle magazine in the grocery store.
I love them though.
