Fashion Week, Day 5: Mixing It Up

Wednesday September 10, 2008
betsey johnsonRemember when you were a kid and tried funky combinations like stripes with plaids, dots with flowers and chartreuse with red? Well, welcome to Spring 2009 fashion. Because with a nod to playful color and print combos, designers are mixing textures (metallic linens with chiffon), and prints (especially different florals) with abandon.

Some designers, like Marc Jacobs (the godfather of grunge) up the ante by adding in mixed cultural references like an obi with a punk safety pin (don't miss his fabulous mixed media and bright yellow Marc Jacobs bags) And then there are designers like Betsey Johnson -- fashion's ultimate good-time girl -- who layers on bright florals (photo, left) without a care.

It's all fun to look at on the runway, but in real life (and at retail) the mixes will end up being much subtler. (Photo Credit: Scott Gries/Getty Images)
