It's easy to walk into any department store and find affordable related separates for the office. But until designer Liz Claiborne came along, retailers hadn't put versatile, fashionable work pieces into one department (where before pants went in the pants department, shirts with shirts, etc.) Herself a working woman, Liz wanted women to have the option of wearing sportswear instead of just suits, according to the Associated Press. Her other innovations came in licensing (who hasn't carried a Liz Claiborne bag?) and overseas manufacturing.
Liz Claiborne Inc. was founded in 1976 by Liz, her husband and two partners and grew to be an almost $5 billion public company, according to LizClaiborne.com. In 1985, Liz Claiborne Inc. became the first company founded by a woman to be listed in the Fortune 500, according to the company website. Although Liz Claiborne retired from active business in 1989, the company continued to grow adding labels such as Kate Spade, Juicy Couture and Narcisco Rodriguez to its diverse holdings, according to the Associated Press.
